News today that Amazon is looking to enter the original programming (OP) game. I get why Netflix and Hulu (and YouTube and Yahoo and AOL, know of any more?) are taking these steps–because the established content producers are not making their content available for streaming (see here, here and here)–but I’m not at all convince […]

The Rise and Fall and Rise of Reed Hastings
Back over the summer and fall amidst the furore over Netflix’s attempt to split itself up, I was taken aback by the vehemence with which Internet commenters put down Hastings. A few months later in December Megan McCardle wrote an article in The Atlantic that chimed nicely my thoughts: if Hastings is such a fool how did […]

It’s the Internet, Go Ahead, Put the Cart First
Foodspotting Begins Looking for Business Models Recently this headline from AdWeek caught my eye. According to the article, apparently the CEO (and co-founder) of Foodspotting is “currently more interested in building an audience than making money”. To me that is the perfect embodiment of putting the cart before the horse. I don’t want to rip […]

15 seconds of fame or immortal forever?

I show up in the second half of the video below: [Video was here] Update March 2008: We were performing “Brown Eyed Girl”, apparently Van Morisson felt threatened and the video was pulled. Sorry to all who missed […]

Racing championships
This past Sunday our club held its Winter match racing championships. We had three local teams and a team from Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, who came and showed us a thing or two and won the championship. I wasn’t sailing, I was on the Race Committee boat, where it was our job to signal […]

Revenge of Winter Match Racing
Just when we thought that Winter was over, we had a bunch of snow and ice dropped on New York. Digging the boats out to racing warmed us up, but by the end of the day I was getting frostbite.

Feb 6: Guadelupe – Departure from Pointe-à-Pitre
We sailed back to the Gosier marina in the morning and were at the airport by 1 p.m. Four of us were flying back together. After 8 days on a boat a couple of us had a hard time adjusting to the steadiness of land–I had to keep rocking sideways to keep from feeling sick!

Feb 5: Guadeloupe – Ilêt Gosier
We spent the morning going over cruising knowledge that we needed for the ASA standard and learning some knots. Bob was doing some very strange things with rope and sometimes it looked like prestidigitation. Meanwhile the Sunsail people replaced the two electric pumps and the furler cleat. Then we sailed to Islêt Gosier, a tiny […]
